Im thinking about getting the iPhone 3.0. I heard that in the previous versions, you couldnt retrieve a video or picture attachment from a text message. Also, I dont think you were able to send a sound clip to your phone via either email or text and then set it as your ringtone. Am I correct about those details? Also, any idea if these are fixed in iPhone 3.0?

A text message (SMS) does not contain pictures. That is called MMS and will be part of the 3.0 update coming out this summer.
You sync ringtones via iTunes. You cant email them to yourself.

I had heard that you need to be on the 3G network to utilize the picture capability within MMS - is this true or will us original iPhone users on EDGE be able to use this functionality?

The Original iPhone will not be able to do MMS. Back in March when 3.0 was announced, they said the Original iPhone did not have the correct hardware for MMS.

Quick follow-up. Can you save audio from MMS messages and then turn those into ringtones? Or are the only ringtones that the iPhone allows are those that you buy from iTunes? On my current Samsung phone, I can send a text message from my yahoo email with an audio attachment and then click save as sound (or something along those lines) and then click set as ringtone. It doesnt seem like much to ask for but I can easily see Apple not wanting that because it would force people to buy their ringtones. Thats EXACTLY the kind of thing that would make me avoid buying their phone.
