Hi there,
I plugged in my iPhone 4S into iTunes, and it tells me that there is an update (iOS 5.1.1)
I click update, it downloads the file and away it goes. I left the computer as this happened, it automatically went to install and when I came back there was an error message. Unfortunately, I don't remember what it said, but what has happened is that the USB cable and iTunes symbol shows on my screen whenever I turn it on (telling me to plug it into my PC). However, iTunes doesn't recognise my phone. Neither does my computer, although it plays the USB sound when I insert/eject my iPhone.
I called apple support and they were of no use, I've read several articles that involved uninstalling all apple programs and starting a fresh all to still be without a phone.
I am at my wits end and most definitely need my phone, so I hope that somebody can please help me resolve this issue as soon as possible!
Try the hard reset. Hold the home and sleep buttons until the apple logo comes up. May take as much as 30 seconds.
If that fails, I hope you have an Apple store close by.
good luck.

I have the exact same problem. It bricked my phone. I also sync my iPad with the same computer and exact same settings. I plug in my iPad and sync everything fine. I then click on "update" to get the 5.1.1 for my iPad. Downloads, starts to install and then runs into an error : "the iPad [name] could not be updated. An unknown error occured (1602)." Now my iPad is also bricked.
I have spent the last 3 hours doing everything possible Apple suggests. I uninstalled and reinstalled itunes. I downloaded new drivers for all my USB devices. I downloaded Windows updates, etc. I tried reinstalling the device drivers (Apple Mobile Device USB driver). I am computer savvy and know my way around Windows device drivers. I turned off Windows Firewall and anti-virus software. I restarted multiple times. NOTHING WORKS.
APPLE ARE YOU LISTENING?!?!?!?
To anyone out there: hold off on installing the 5.1.1 update!
