A new front has opened in the ongoing arms race between Apple and iPhone hackers, with one hacker group making the iPhone boot with a Linux 2.6 kernel.

The announcement of the successful kernel porting was made on the Linux on the iPhone blog, complete with instructions and source code.

Although a bootloader, kernel and a Busybox terminal are able to be loaded -- many features of the iPhone remain unimplemented: touchscreen, sound, accelerometer, networking. Input to the terminal must be made via a USB interface from another device that the iPhone is attached to (humorously summed up by Geek Hero Comic).

The group that ported the kernel is derived from the iPhone DevTeam group that has been responsible for jailbreaking previous iPhone software.

My old Casio organizer had an alarm that I always set for appt.s in the
future, where I would get a nice full alarm to remind of that days
specific appt.
Looks like an oversight , but I phone does not have this feature, only a little
worthless chirp can be set, which cannot be heard by a normal human.
any ideas on how to make the full Alarm tones engage while setting a future
calendar date?

This needs to be addressed soon. I like the alerts that repeat every 5 minutes until dismissed.

Hi,
I have an iPhone 3GS, sometimes when I receive a text message from someone in my contacts the message displays there number as +61 xx xxxx instead of the contact name. So I dont know who messaged me without going through all the conacts. I saved them in my contacts as 04xxxxx xx.
Anyone else have this problem?

My iPhone 3G is not one year old yet, but the USB/Sync cable that came with it is ripping on both ends exposing the wire underneath. Is this covered under warranty?

The intention of this topic is to announce to Apple consumer interest in a feature that has long been absent on the iPhone: custom text message sounds. Cheap flip phones have had the feature for years, why doesnt the iPhone?
Apple Discussions readers, if you are interested in custom text sounds on the iPhone, please submit an Enhancement Request on the Apple iPhone feedback website: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
The following is what I wrote in my Enhancement Request to Apple:
I am a new iPhone 3GS owner and am generally pleased with my purchase. However, while the iPhone lets me customize my ringtone with songs from my iTunes library, I am limited to 6 choices for the text message received sounds. This is a problem because many of my friends have iPhones, and with the limited sound choices, I frequently mistake the text message sound from my friends phones for my own. At university, this circumstance occurs extremely frequently.
My previous flip phone cost less then $50 and was capable of custom text message sounds. The fact that a $200 iPhone does not have this feature after 2 major hardware revisions and software updates is unacceptable to me.
I feel so strongly about customizing my text message sounds, that I intend to jailbreak my iPhone exclusively to add custom text message sounds.
Please add the ability to customize text message sounds. If not as an end-user feature, then at least as a Developer API.
Thank you for your consideration,
Greg
Apple consumers pay top dollar for their products. We should not be forced to void our phones warranty to change a Beep sound to a Boop.

I just tried to upgrade my software and half way through my PC crashed. It said a blue screen error had occurred.
Itunes now shows that my phone needs to be restored, but everytime I try to do my PC crashes again. This has now happened three times in 1 hour. I have Itunes v.8.0 on my pc but this hasnt been a problem till now. I am so angry that I have lost everything on my phone due to a problem like this. Can anyone advise how I can restore my phone without totally killing my laptop?
