A new front has opened in the ongoing arms race between Apple and iPhone hackers, with one hacker group making the iPhone boot with a Linux 2.6 kernel.
The announcement of the successful kernel porting was made on the Linux on the iPhone blog, complete with instructions and source code.
Although a bootloader, kernel and a Busybox terminal are able to be loaded -- many features of the iPhone remain unimplemented: touchscreen, sound, accelerometer, networking. Input to the terminal must be made via a USB interface from another device that the iPhone is attached to (humorously summed up by Geek Hero Comic).
The group that ported the kernel is derived from the iPhone DevTeam group that has been responsible for jailbreaking previous iPhone software.

Hi all,
My iphone 3G got water damaged. At this urgent moment, i had to ask a local repairer to open the phone and dried it though i know it would void warranty, I had no choice. If i did not do that, the phone would get damage totally.
could apple repair/replace a refurbished phone for me with a fee. And if so, how much do i have to pay.
Please give me some answer since this is the 3rd times i post the thread. Please...
Thanks you all.

A water damaged phone can be replaced by Apple for $199 since water damage is outside the warranty.

Thanks for your response.
Will the phone be replaced even if it was opened ?

Maybe not if it can be determined that your iPhone was opened, but there is only one way to determine this for certain and that is by contacting Apple or AppleCare.
Is there an Apple store nearby? If so, you can make an appointment.

Thanks Allan,
It is true that the phone was opened. I do not try to hide it. But I had to do this because as i said before, if i did not let them open the phone, it could be completely damage. I can feel the heat from the phone. I could not turn off the phone when the water came inside it.
Actually i live in viet nam. But my relative is going to US next two week so i am here to find some help about my problem.
Again, thanks you

Youre welcome.
My previous post was done with my iPhone and I failed to notice your location.
Where was your iPhone purchased new?
Since you are in VietNam, if your iPhone was purchased in the U.S. likely means you are using a hacked iPhone. The iPhone is sold in the U.S. as carrier locked with AT&T only. If your iPhone was purchased in the U.S. and has been hacked to be unlocked, I think it is doubtful that Apple will provide you the repair price mentioned, which pays for an exchange. I believe activation with AT&T is required for the repair or exchange price mentioned.
If your iPhone was purchased in another country as officially unlocked, you or your iPhone must be returned to the country where the iPhone was sold officially by Apple. The repair or exchange price mentioned, is for iPhones that were sold in the U.S. The same may be offered in each country where the iPhone is sold officially by Apple, but Im not sure.

Has anyone already tried to connect an external keyboard via Bluetooth within OS 3 ?
I intend to buy one. Is there anything I have to pay attention to?
Thanks a lot

Upgraded to iPhone 3.0 and now have foreign language on phone! For example, the slider on the lock page says las op, favorites in phone says, favoritter, mobile is spelled mobil. What did I do and how do I get back to English!
Thanks!

Foreign languages were available with the iPhone prior to firmware update 3.0.
Go to Settings > General > International.
There are language, keyboards, and region format settings.

Gear icon settings>general (gear icon)>keyboard (scroll to the bottom and it should be the 4th from the bottom. if that is not it try the 3rd and so on.)>bottom button (international keyboards)>slide to top one to on (English).

Ive had my iPhone 3G for almost a year in September. Today I noticed a dead pixel on the right side. Its not very noticeable on a white screen but very noticeable on a black or dark screen, such as when Im watching a video podcast etc. I searched the forums, since I noticed that was a pet peeve of some users, and got info to go to an Apple Store but I live in Arkansas and we unfortunately do not have one. My limited warranty expires in September 09. Do I have any options or am I out of luck. Thanks in advance for any advice

If an Apple store is not nearby, you can call AppleCare at (800) 694-7466.

Incidentally, just to make sure you use the right language when you call, it sounds like you have a stuck pixel (glowing green or another color against dark backgrounds) as opposed to a dead (dark) pixel. Stuck pixels tend to be way more annoying because they really stand out.
If you dont have another phone to use while yours is being fixed or replaced, Apple can ship you an iPhone to use while yours is being evaluated. Since you dont have the AppleCare extended warranty, it will cost you something like $39. They will send you the loaner, you transfer your SIM card into it, then send them your phone in the same packaging. Couldnt be easier.
