A new front has opened in the ongoing arms race between Apple and iPhone hackers, with one hacker group making the iPhone boot with a Linux 2.6 kernel.
The announcement of the successful kernel porting was made on the Linux on the iPhone blog, complete with instructions and source code.
Although a bootloader, kernel and a Busybox terminal are able to be loaded -- many features of the iPhone remain unimplemented: touchscreen, sound, accelerometer, networking. Input to the terminal must be made via a USB interface from another device that the iPhone is attached to (humorously summed up by Geek Hero Comic).
The group that ported the kernel is derived from the iPhone DevTeam group that has been responsible for jailbreaking previous iPhone software.

Hello. If this has been covered in another forum please feel free to point me to it.
That said, heres my issue:
I have the new 3GS phone. Love it, of course.
I am frequently at different clients offices.
If I am at Client As office and Client B sends me a text, I want it to show up as New Text (or something similar) and NOT show the Clients name or number as it is in my address book. Many of my clients enjoy the fact that I keep them to myself and not name-drop as to who they are. So, if my phone is on the desk near me, as it often is, and a text pops up, I would rather it not show Client A who Client B is.
I went under settings and turned off the preview in the Text Settings, but that does not do what I want.
Is there a way or a hack even, to do what I want?
Thanks for any help with this.

Youll have to ask Apple. Maybe they use an unreleased version of the phone app. Everyone else gets the same call screen as you do.

Good morning,
When in iTunes, and iPhone is connected, I cannot play songs on the ipod part of my iphone, only songs in the iTunes library.
Is this becuase the playlist is synced?
Thanks

Because this is the way the iphone works.
Since you sync to your computer, the same music should be available on your computer, no need to play from iphone.

This is true and thanks for the reply.
I am asking becuase I have never used sync with any of the 6 ipods i have gone through, so was able to play off the ipod.
I thought maybe it was different with this becuase it is an iphone.
It must be because of the syncing.

The iphone is not designed to allow this. It does not support disk mode as an ipod does, and does not allow for itunes content to be synced or managed or accessed from more than one computer.
You can manually manage music on the iphone. Still from only one computer.

No, its because the iPhone has no disc mode and works differently than your iPods. Notice that your iPhone never appears on your desktop either, but only shows up in iTunes, unlike your iPods.

Why did I have to download the 3.0 upgrade with a brand new 3G phone? Was this something I should not have done? This is my first iPhone and Im reading all about this battery drain with the 3.0...im getting nervous. Should I have left the phone as it was? Why would a new phone need an upgrade on the same day? Please...someone with some info on this inform me!

You bought a new iphone. You upgraded to the new software. All is well. Why are you worried?
Some have has battery issues, most never have an issue at all with their iphone.

well i dont have an issue...just wondering why i had to upgrade the same day i recvd my phone? I would think that the phone would have all the updates already in it. Also, when i check the memory, it says the phone has 7.1gb capacity but is supposed to be the 8gb. Is this because of the programs already on the phone?

Other than the 8GB iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS, all other iPhones were probably sitting in the warehouse prior to OS 3.0 coming out. You got a phone that had shipped before the software was ready, and you had to update it.
Dont worry about the battery problems. Probably 99.99% of iPhones shipped have no problems. The issues that have appeared are either user error, a few users whining over and over again so it appears significant, and genuine manufacturing issues. We can help you with user issues, dont repeat issues, and if you have a real problem, then head to the Apple store as fast as you can, and they will replace it.
Its easy.

This is the way memory is reported by all manufacturers and all products.
Look at your laptop, it does the same thing.

.just wondering why i had to upgrade the same day i recvd my phone?
Because there was a new update available. Your new iphone was not manufactured the day you got it. It was manufactured weeks, maybe months ago. The new software update obviously was not out yet when the iphone was made and then sealed inside the box.

Hello,
I would like to ask if there is a way to type an SMS on my Mac and then send it with my iPhone connected via Bluetooth, Wifi or cable ? Many other phone manufacturer offer a software suite to do so with their phones, and since OSX and the iPhone are from the same company I thought there must be an easy way to do so, but I couldnt find anything yet. Has anyone tried this already or has a solution to this ?
Many thanks,
Romazzino.

I am not aware of an option for this - at the present time anyway.

Its not the neatest way but you could write a note in Mail on OSX which will sync to the notes app on the iPhone via MobileMe. After this you can open the note select all and copy and paste into the SMS app. Another way would be to email the message to yourself and do the same copy and paste. If anybody knows a simpler way I would also like to know.
Hope this helps,
Chuck
