A new front has opened in the ongoing arms race between Apple and iPhone hackers, with one hacker group making the iPhone boot with a Linux 2.6 kernel.
The announcement of the successful kernel porting was made on the Linux on the iPhone blog, complete with instructions and source code.
Although a bootloader, kernel and a Busybox terminal are able to be loaded -- many features of the iPhone remain unimplemented: touchscreen, sound, accelerometer, networking. Input to the terminal must be made via a USB interface from another device that the iPhone is attached to (humorously summed up by Geek Hero Comic).
The group that ported the kernel is derived from the iPhone DevTeam group that has been responsible for jailbreaking previous iPhone software.

Has anyone already tried to connect an external keyboard via Bluetooth within OS 3 ?
I intend to buy one. Is there anything I have to pay attention to?
Thanks a lot
Peter

Upgraded to iPhone 3.0 and now have foreign language on phone! For example, the slider on the lock page says las op, favorites in phone says, favoritter, mobile is spelled mobil. What did I do and how do I get back to English!
Thanks!

Foreign languages were available with the iPhone prior to firmware update 3.0.
Go to Settings > General > International.
There are language, keyboards, and region format settings.

Ive had my iPhone 3G for almost a year in September. Today I noticed a dead pixel on the right side. Its not very noticeable on a white screen but very noticeable on a black or dark screen, such as when Im watching a video podcast etc. I searched the forums, since I noticed that was a pet peeve of some users, and got info to go to an Apple Store but I live in Arkansas and we unfortunately do not have one. My limited warranty expires in September 09. Do I have any options or am I out of luck. Thanks in advance for any advice

If an Apple store is not nearby, you can call AppleCare at (800) 694-7466.

Incidentally, just to make sure you use the right language when you call, it sounds like you have a stuck pixel (glowing green or another color against dark backgrounds) as opposed to a dead (dark) pixel. Stuck pixels tend to be way more annoying because they really stand out.
If you dont have another phone to use while yours is being fixed or replaced, Apple can ship you an iPhone to use while yours is being evaluated. Since you dont have the AppleCare extended warranty, it will cost you something like $39. They will send you the loaner, you transfer your SIM card into it, then send them your phone in the same packaging. Couldnt be easier.

We bought a couple of iPhones recently and been trying to get use to them, in comparison to my Sprint phone which was a Sanyo. Ive been trying to find in the iPhones General settings and everywhere else and see if there is an indicator light to tell you you have voicemail or someone tried calling, when the iPhone is off. On the old phone, whenever I had a call come in that I missed there was a blinking light, or the word Voice Message, would show up. As sophisticated as iPhone is, surely it isnt that you have to keep turning the phone on to see if anyone has called? Is there a light that blinks when the phone is off to let you know that someone has called or youve missed a call? Thank you for any info.

No light, no beep, nada. You do have to turn it on and you can see the number of calls you missed.

I prefer it myself, didnt really like all the blinking on my Treo. Isnt that much of an effort to unlock the iPhone and check for messages, it saves on battery life, and it is one less thing to break/burn out. Cant really think of a good place where you would put the LED, but if you can then tell Apple:
