A new front has opened in the ongoing arms race between Apple and iPhone hackers, with one hacker group making the iPhone boot with a Linux 2.6 kernel.

The announcement of the successful kernel porting was made on the Linux on the iPhone blog, complete with instructions and source code.

Although a bootloader, kernel and a Busybox terminal are able to be loaded -- many features of the iPhone remain unimplemented: touchscreen, sound, accelerometer, networking. Input to the terminal must be made via a USB interface from another device that the iPhone is attached to (humorously summed up by Geek Hero Comic).

The group that ported the kernel is derived from the iPhone DevTeam group that has been responsible for jailbreaking previous iPhone software.

Hi All,
Yesterday my iPhone 3G started acting up, I get a call failed message when trying to place a call and incoming calls cannot be answered. Every other feature works as usual including texting, voicemail, and internet access. I didnt change any settings and I have in no way hacked my phone.
Ive tried turning it off/on numerous times to refresh the connection, Ive even tried to restore it and it didnt work. What else can I do?
Please help! What has happened to the PHONE in my iPhone!!!!

Have you tried calling ATT and see if there is a problem with your account?

It may have nothing to do with your bill but a technical glitch on their end.

I have the same problem, although I can make and receive calls when I have the earphones plugged in. I tried my sim card in my old phone and it worked fine, so its definitely something thats wrong with the iPhone. Did you ever find a way to get it to work again? Or did it have to go back to Apple?

Try adjusting the ringer volume with the headphones disconnected, does the iPhone say (Headphones)?

If it does there may be some debris in the headphone jack, try to plug in and unplug the headphones a few times.
This article provides more information about that issue: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1630
If the issue is not caused by debris in the iPhone headphone jack, try the general troubleshooting tips in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1737
