A new front has opened in the ongoing arms race between Apple and iPhone hackers, with one hacker group making the iPhone boot with a Linux 2.6 kernel.

The announcement of the successful kernel porting was made on the Linux on the iPhone blog, complete with instructions and source code.

Although a bootloader, kernel and a Busybox terminal are able to be loaded -- many features of the iPhone remain unimplemented: touchscreen, sound, accelerometer, networking. Input to the terminal must be made via a USB interface from another device that the iPhone is attached to (humorously summed up by Geek Hero Comic).

The group that ported the kernel is derived from the iPhone DevTeam group that has been responsible for jailbreaking previous iPhone software.

If you buy or bought an iPhone 3G in an O2 shop, took it home, then discovered a problem with it, could you return it to the Apple Store instead, and get them to exchange it for a non-faulty one?
I have an iPhone 3G that has a display with a really poor viewing angle. Ive compared it to other iPhone 3Gs and its noticeably sub-standard. When you look at it from the left side, the screen looks really light, and the blacks turn to light blue and wash out. When you look at it from the right side, all the light colours go yellow, and the dark colours invert and look polarised.

I have a 3G iPhone purchased in HK. It does work in Japan with its HK number on a roaming basis, but id like to know if i can purchase a Japan Sim Card (from SoftBank i guess), prepaid or with a contract attached, to be able to use it in Japan with a local number.
More generally, is there any place where Apple is giving some support to international users to help them sorting out those cross-country usage issues ? Obviously local providers (HK or Japan) are of very little help on the matter...
Thanks

Hi,
I believe iPhones purchased in HK are sold officially unlocked by Apple. Therefore, you can insert any SIM from any country and it should work.
However, there are some reports, after the 2.2 update some officially unlocked iPhones are getting locked. In this case you should take it to Apple store and they should fix it.
Good luck.

Hi, thanks for your answer.
Yes true the HK iPhone is unlocked and the SIM card replaceable. But the issue is more on the japanese side, where phones are usually SIM-locked, and so is the iPhone as i understand it. Is however Softbank (or any other guy) able to provide a stand-alone SIM card, either on a prepaid or on a contract basis ?

Hi there
I dont know whether you can get standalone SIM cards in Japan (I assume you mean prepaid?), but I can confirm that all HK phones are sold unlocked.
Bear in mind that you will need a computer running iTunes 8 to actually use another SIM though. You pull the HK SIM out, replace with the JP SIM and then the phone will ask you to connect to iTunes to activate the SIM. Takes about 15 seconds and then all should work fine.

The mute button came off my iPhone the other day during normal use which I have since discovered this is a fairly common problem but had never heard of it before.
My problem is I bought the phone while on holidays in Italy, and they are sold unlocked their by apple due to laws in the country. However apple support said they cant help me unless I have an address in Italy where they can pick up and ship a return/replacement to. Apple said this is covered off in their warranty but from looking their plant in Ireland is their european HQ. Does any one know if what the support people have told me is correct ?
