A new front has opened in the ongoing arms race between Apple and iPhone hackers, with one hacker group making the iPhone boot with a Linux 2.6 kernel.
The announcement of the successful kernel porting was made on the Linux on the iPhone blog, complete with instructions and source code.
Although a bootloader, kernel and a Busybox terminal are able to be loaded -- many features of the iPhone remain unimplemented: touchscreen, sound, accelerometer, networking. Input to the terminal must be made via a USB interface from another device that the iPhone is attached to (humorously summed up by Geek Hero Comic).
The group that ported the kernel is derived from the iPhone DevTeam group that has been responsible for jailbreaking previous iPhone software.

Did a few searches, but did not find the answer I am looking for.. only found for MMS / SMS.
When someone calls and I dont have my phone close enough to hear it ring, I dont know that someone called. I am forced to physically check the phone each time I a near it to see if I missed any calls. I missed an important biz call yesterday and a voicemail was sitting on my phone for 3 hours before I decided to make a call and noticed one was there.
All my past phones will beep letting me know a call is missed. I can see where I can configure repeat notices for text messages, but not where to set it up for missed phone calls.
Am I missing something obvious?
Thanks in advance.

With previous phones, all Ive ever had was a single audible alert and the tape symbol in the top corner if Ive got a voicemail. If I was nowhere near my phone at the time, Id still be forced to look at it, just as I would with the iPhone.

The iPhone is my first phone in the smart phone category. Most of the previous dumb phones Ive used included an audible alert after a missed call indicating there was a missed call with no on/off option for the audible alert, which I didnt like much. This forced me to manually handle the phone to turn the audible alert off.
If Apple decides to add such an audible alert with a firmware update, which I understand is important to some, I sure hope there is an on/off option for the alert that doesnt force me to manually handle the iPhone to turn the alert off.

that was my first thought. Have checked firewall and spyware applications on my comp and both are enabled to allow updates, etc from Apple & iTunes.
Never had this problem before with updates etc, its strange that iTunes 8.2 will download but not 3.0
I dont know whether to uninstall 8.2 and try from scratch or try updating from another computer

Try temporarily turning off your firewall, and temporarily disabling your anti-virus, anti-spyware/adware and any other anti-whatever that is required with Windows before the download.

You can download the firmware by searching for it on various 3rd party sites. Make sure you use the 7A341 build.
It can be done by first backing up your phone, and then holding shift (on a pc) alt (on a mac) and clicking restore and locating the downloaded file. This should work as an alternative to the iTunes update downloader and it is the official OS 3.0 build.

Since upgrading to OS 3.0 I have noticed that the calculator has a comma (,) rather than a point (.). I find this rather irritating - any suggestions on getting the point back?

Im not having this problem, but I do know that in the French language, they use a comma instead of a decimal. Do you have french set as the default language?

Thanks Minny, that seemed a logical solution, but I checked and the default language is set for English.

Finally sorted out the problem. My region format was set to South Africa. After changing this to United States the comma disappeared in the calculator.

See this Apple support article:

The first thing to try is to reinstall iTunes from a downloaded copy rather than the OS X software update process.

I have to use my ear buds with calls. When using the phone to make calls or receive, the volume is so low that I cant hear. I have tried to reset with the airplane mode, turned off wifi, and reset my 3Gs. Anyone have a similar problem. I had this problem with my new 3Gs so after numerous calls to Apple support, it was returned and the same thing happened with the new one. I wonder if there is an issue with my PC and syncing, maybe a virus that is causing this problem when I sync??

Have you tried to adjust the volume while actually on a call?
Your volume switches work differently depending on what you are doing. You may get a readout above the speaker symbol that appears on the screen telling you what volume is being adjusted.
If you are not using anything, the volume switches adjust the ringer volume.
If you are playing music or video, they adjust the music/video volume.
If your headphones are plugged in, they adjust the headset volume.
If you are actually on a call, they adjust the earpiece volume or speakerphone volume, whichever you are using (without a readout).
If you are on a phone call using bluetooth, they adjust the bluetooth volume.
Dial something like the National Time Signal (303) 499-7111 and adjust the volume during the call.
Also, Ive found that the ear piece really needs to be right over your ear canal opening. Try moving it around to find the sweet spot.
