I want to download my text messages to my computer iPhone

Messages are only downloaded by iTunes as part of the iPhone backup, and are only there for the purposes of restoring the phone (they can't be read separately).  You would have to use 3rd party software such as PhoneView (mac) or Touch Copy (pc or mac) to accomplish this.

You don't mention what operating system you use. On Macs, Phoneview will do what you want. I believe the software that can do that on Windows is called TouchCopy. I use Phoneview to create PDF archives of my texts. The date and time of every text is displayed.
