I lost ALL my contacts when I upgraded to iOS5.1. iPhone

I upgraded my iPhone 4 from iOS4 to iOS5.1 last night while connected to iTunes. My contacts list became empty when the phone came back on.

I already tried to retrieve the contacts through the following methods:

Open a recent Text Message, tap “Contact” and edit.Turn off and on icloud.Import from SIM.Reset the phone and re-sync.Restore from backup. All previous backups from iOS4 are inaccessible.I do not have the contacts list backed up on Windows/Outlook/Google/etc. I was naive to put my trust in Apple.

The contacts are not on icloud.com either.

This is utterly ridiculous. There was no warning about losing contacts. I followed the directions on iTunes and on the phone. My phone is NOT jailbroken. It's Apple hardware and Apple software, I do not see how this happened other than because of a fault on Apple's part. After months of complaints from consumers, there was no warning or fix to this problem that has been well known to Apple. I already wasted more than 4 hours trying to find a way to get the contacts list back to no avail. I am very frustrated.

Is there a way to get my contacts back or are they lost forever?

hi, in itunes did you saw your previous backup of ios4 ? As i understand, before upgrade to IOS 5.1, itunes should have backup all your existing ios 4 (contacts, apps,etc). Try restore from the ios4 backup if there is any. On the itunes, you can check your backup under the edit/preferences/devices.

No, I do not see any iOS4 back up under edit/preferences/devices. Every time I sync, iTunes says backing up, either it doesn't or it has wiped it clean during the iOS5 upgrade.

In addition, my question about legal action was censored by "Host" adding insult to the injury.

I have to same problem. I backed up before upgrading to avoid this issue and I still lost all my contacts and they are no where to be found. I tried all the fixes, they are gone! I thought they would back up to my computer, but they didn't. I'm beyond furious! I will never be able to replace those contacts, it's impossible. I even did a restore 3x from the backup when the contacts where still on my phone and NOTHING!

It's not apple's fault that people don't know how to sync properly.

Make sure you sync your contacts to a separate source. Never EVER rely on cloud storage.

After my 4th restore from the backup I did earlier, my contacts finally came back! Don't ask me why I had to do it 4 times from the same backup source, but I just kept trying and the 4th time it worked. So frustrating. Never updating again. Going to upgrade the phone anyway. And I did sync it properly.
