i cannot have software update with my original iphone

Until now my iphones vesion is 1.1.4 =(
everytime i try to update my iphones software, i wait for about 2 hours for the iphone software update and when the download bar is already full, this message always appear :
THERE WAS A PROBLEM DOWNLOADING THE IPHONE SOFTWARE FOR THE ____S iPHONE. THE NETWORK CONNECTION TIMED OUT.
Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later.
i have already tried updating for about 10 or 15 times and this is what always happens after waiting for hours and hours... and it really makes me upset...
PLEASE... ANYONE HELP ME....

Could it be somethig to do with your firewall settings?
