I can t access iTunes Store iPhone 3G

My wife is the proud new owner of an iPhone4S. I am trying to help her set it up. Am currently trying to download an app called AirportZoom which appears to be available on iTunes. I can access the app on my Mac desktop and have downloaded it (AirportZoom) within my iTunes account, however I'm having trouble accessing the iTunes store/ App Store App on the phone. When I select the App Store icon, I get a message "can't connect to iTunes store" and then the phone does not offer a solution... I have been able to download apps from the App Store. I don't understand how I can be connecting to the App Store, but not the iTunes Store.

So on the iPhone, I want to go to the iTunes Store, better yet go to my account at the iTunes Store, select the App and download.

I've checked around in settings and can't find a culprit. Any ideas?

I've been researching online and have run across several articles indicating you have to connect your iphone to your Mac to synch downloaded apps, really? I thought you'd be apple to sign into iTunes directly from your phone, sign in with your account and access your apps or at least download them to your phone, no?

It's looking like access to iTunes every now and then, so maybe it's an internet issue (connecting from home). However when I get the iTunes page to load up on the iphone, it looks nothing like iTunes on my desktop Mac. For example, on my desktop, iTunes has an "app" category and it lists all the apps I've downloaded for our ipad2. My goal is to download some of the apps I've all ready downloaded, but onto the iPhone. On the phone, I see categories such as "downloads", "music", "video", but no "App" category. Should I be seeing this? If so, how do I navigate to it?
