Does he have his own computer that his iPod Touch has been synced with? If so, his iPod Touch needs to be updated on that computer.

yes to my daughter's lap top but she has since had t replace the hard drive in her lap topand his ipod has not been synced with any computer in a long long time

OK, I think what you will need to do is this:

1. Open itunes, click 'Edit', click 'Preferences", click 'devices', click 'prevent iPads, iPhones, iPads from syncing automatically.

2. Connect the iPod, click on the iPod under 'devices' on the left

3. Click 'check for updates' on the summary page on the right.

I would suggest a search of this forum for further advice on what to do when you no longer have the original iTunes library regarding saving the music and apps. You can transfer purchased items from the iPod to the computer but I am not sure about adding it to your iTunes library. You can have more than one device syncing as each device will have it's own sync preferences. I have never had to do this, so I am going by what I have read in the past.
