home bottom not working iPhone 4

this happened to me once. hold down the lock button the top right of the phone until it says, in red at the top of the screen, "slide to power off." it will power off and, a few minutes later, hold down the top button and the home button until you see an apple logo.

UPDATE: this, unfortunately, could also be the result of the pins inside the button not being properly aligned. this would require attention from apple who should be able to realign it or give you a new device
