Hold screen-stop it from going into standby mode iPhone

Is there a way to hold the screen, i.e. stop it going into standby mode other than going into Settings > General > Autolock and setting it to never?
Its really annoying as sometimes Ill want to hold the screen for an app just for that instance.
Any ideas, or is it another feature that is missing?
