Provider: Fido (Canada)
Iphone 3G 8gb
Firmware: 3.1.2
Problem:
Ever since going from 2.2.1 to 3 (includes all of 3.01, 3.1, 3.1.2) I have had nothing but problems with network connectivity (not wifi). My phone will randomly loose its connectivity and show no bars. Problem seems to happen when I do not use my phone for a while.
Stuff Ive tried:
4 calls to my carrier, multiple firmware re-installs (including just the default 3.1.2 firmware with nothing else installed) and the problem persists. Ive had my phone since August 2008, and Ive been using it in the same areas since, and before going from 2.2.1 to 3 I have never had ANY network connectivity issues. Putting the phone in EDGE (turning off 3G) seems to minimize the problem, but it still occurs.
In the end, Im left with a great ipod but a really bad phone since the 3 firmware update. I am seeing many others in the forums having the same problem. Has Apple acknowledged this? None of the posts in the forums have any official responses.

Per the terms of use you were provided and had to agree to when registering here, this is a user to user help forum ONLY, which is provided and moderated by Apple. Apple does not provide any direct support here or replies to any posts.
Not to diminish your problem, but I have not experienced the same, and I venture to say the overwhelming majority of users running 3.0 or later havent either.
If a firmware update would resolve what is a problem for a small percentage of users, Apple must ensure that it doesnt cause a problem for the overwhelming majority of users who arent experiencing the same. Sounds easy, but no small task.
When you restored, did this include restoring as a new iPhone or not from your iPhones backup? If so with no change, have you contacted AppleCare about this problem and if your iPhone remains under warranty, a possible exchange under warranty due to a hardware problem?

I am having the EXACT same problem as you Jorlen. My phone is from August 2008 and I will randomly lose service or it will switch from 3G to E network randomly (I live in the middle of Boston). My friends iphone 3GS works perfectly and Ive led it to be the phones problem. Since mine is not under warranty (didnt get the AppleCare) I cannot do anything but complain to Apple. Im going to try again to tell them that a phone should not break down within one year or a lawsuit will might have to follow. Because honestly, its ridiculous if my phone breaks after ONE YEAR! (It has had a case on it until recently, screen protector, never dropped, never dropped in water).
Hopefully I will get a new one if I just keep complaining to them.

I live in Switzerland and I am experiencing the same problem which is increased in frequency in the last couple of months. I have taken a few snapshots of the problem and went into my local Swisscom shop where I purchased the iPhone. The response was to me amazing !!
Do I switch the iPhone off each day ? No was my response to which I was advised that it is necessary - first I have ever heard that a phone needs to be rebooted every day particularyl if it is not running Windows mobile. Second question - have I restored it recently - complete amazement on my part - the answer was no there has been no reason to restore the iphone. I was told that I should restore it as this is what Apple will do if the phone is sent back to them so it is better if I restore it and then this can be marked on the documentation that will accompany the iPhone.

None of this makes any sense to me but what was really over the top was the iPhone suffers from "fatigue" and requires to be switched off every day and restored routinely. Can anyone provide an authorative answer to this problem of network loss ?
