So ive done a hard reset, and then when completing the initial setup (language, country etc etc) is ask me to connect to itunes which i do but then doesnt get any further??

Yes, it comes up saying there was a problem setting up your iPhone, please restart

Does it give you an error code? Try putting it into DFU mode.
