I read on the apple site that the Iphone 3GS can tether to the mac but does it work for just the normal iPhone 3G?

I have a 3G with OS 3.0 but I do not have the tethering option as described in the info article. Settings > General > Network does not show this option. All is has is Enable 3G
Data Roaming
VPN
WiFi
When you say AT&T has to enable this, will it show up then?
