Jobs mentioned facetime will soon connect using email addressesI thought it could already do that? The new iPod Touches have cameras facing the user, after all. And Apple says ON THE IPOD TOUCH HOMEPAGE that they can support FaceTime calls. iPods obviously don't have phone numbers, so if they can support FaceTime, then logically iMacs also should, since all current iMacs (and some older ones) have cameras.

FaceTime needs the software to work as well as the camera. The iPhone and new iPod touch have the FaceTime software - the Mac doesn't.

The iPhone and new iPod touch have the FaceTime software - the Mac doesn't.But surely the Mac could GET the software, right? All it would take would be a software update.

If the software existed then yes, but it doesn't exist (yet) - someone (presumably Apple) would have to write it. It wouldn't just magically appear in a software update on it's own.For all we know, Apple could be developing a computer version of FaceTime right now - it would certainly make sense.

Apple wants the FaceTime protocol to be adopted as an open standard by other services such as Skype, AIM, etc. If they write proprietary software for Macs only, it will make that less likely to happen. Even the Mac iChat works through AIM.
