With firmware update 3.0 along with a MobileMe account, you will be able to locate your iPhone (if on).
Location services with the iPhone requires approving the service each time for privacy concerns.
Did you have the Passcode lock feature enabled along with the erase data option - which erases all content and settings after 10 failed passcode attempts?
If not, you should change the email account password for every email account that you were accessing with the iPhones Mail client.
