Bought my 3G on may 29th. The AT&T store that I bought my iphone from stinks and wont pick up after 6 calls over an hours time.
A good friend of mine who has had the 3G since the 1st day it came out told me (a few weeks ago), that the new iPhone is coming out, however I can still download the new OS 3.0. I took that for granted and thought, meh, I just want it NOW and surely the new update will be fine. LOL @ ME, the new S model is sick. Like a turbocharged version basically. 200hp motor, or 300 hp motor, for same price...?!
Ive been browsing around on here and want to confirm that this is true:
If I pre-order the iPhone 3G S (should do within the next few days, its hot), then take my originally bought 3G to my AT&T store, they will charge me a $20 restocking fee, and just exchange the phones.
If I dont plan on getting the 3G S, and choose to keep my 3G, then I can just go to my store and get $100 store credit (I doubt cash?)
Final question (of greater unknowing to me): I just registered my extended protection plan (2 years of warranty) a few days ago. That was $70. Not cheap. Would they transfer that over to my new iphone, or just completely ignore the fact that I spent $70 for an extended warranty? I could picture a big company like Apple trying to milk every dollar out of users.
P.S. I FREAKING love the iPhone, I mostly love playing games (Sims 3, and NFSUndercover) and it runs great. But the new features of the 3G S (not to mention 16GB rather than 8GB) just makes it a no brainer for anyone who uses their iphone at all.
P.S.S, I feel really bad for those out of luck who has gone past their 30 day grace period (or will very soon)... things happen and technology is ALWAYS being updated.

Oh yeah and for you who are familiar with the launch of the original 3G or even the original iPhone, how was availability?
Because it was VERY difficult to get my mother to purchase my sister and I 2 iphone + 2 year contract (~$180/month). If we have to pre-order the 3G S online (and pay for it too) then I dont think thatd fly. I hope I can pre-order it for my account/contract, then go to the AT&T store and they will have it to switch for my 3G.

I doubt you will start getting charged monthly until you actually get the phone and activate it at home.
For your other questions, you should be able return your current phone then get the new one when it comes out. I have heard nothing about sticking with your current 3G and getting a 100$ credit.

If you try to preorder the phone while you still have the old one it will say your are not eligible for the upgrade. (as you just got the 3G)
Your best bet is to go to the store, return your phone, and then order the 3GS.
If you decided to stick with the 3G, they will refund the difference in price as you are still within the 30 day return policy.

Thank you for the replies.
I love the iphone SO much that I think I will keep it until the 3GS comes out, because I saw it comes out the 17th (or 19th?) and my 30 day period isnt up until June 29th.
I may go talk to my salesman (he was top notch) about whether I should be able to get one. I would dislike returning it tomorrow, then waiting 2 weeks for the 3GS (then what would I do for a phone?)
What about my games/apps that ive paid for on iTunes? Would I be able to re-download them without having to re-pay for them, on a new iPhone?
Finally (I may have to go to the store to see), that $70 protection plan. Would it just carry over to my newly purchased phone, or would I have to spend a grand total of $140 (70x2) to have an extra year of warranty?
Thanks

Okay I just talked to a store that would actually pick up their phone...
My 70$ protection plan will transfer over from phone to phone (since its within 30 day period and all)
I MUST return this phone before I can order the 3GS.
But Im still unsure about the iTunes and having to repay.
