Backlight issue and dead pixe issue iPhone 3G

I unpacked my iPhone 3G on O2 pay-as-you-go last night and noticed that there was a dead pixel and the backlight was leaking through left hand side of the iPhone (by the silver trim) The dead pixel isnt that much of an issue but I am not very happy with the back light issue. I brought the phone while I was holiday so I am unble to return it to O2 and we dont have an Apple store here!.
Are these issues common with the 3G?
Any advice would be greatly received.
