I recently updated my AT&T iPhone 4s to iOS5.1. After the update I noticed "4G" in the upper left-hand corner next to the AT&T signal strength icon. Is that possible? Or is this just a software glitch that came with the IOS update?

AT&T markets HSPA+ as "4G" as do a number of other carriers. The iPhone 4S has been HSPA+ capable since day one. The update simply changes the indicator to "4G" when you are connected to an HSPA+ node.
It is not the same as LTE. The iPhone 4S does not have the hardware to connect to LTE.
4G is nothing more than a marketing term at this point.

Unfortunately your phone didn't get any "faster" after the update.
Yes it's a glitch....a marketing glitch.
