I just learned that I'm ineligible to enroll in At&t's mobile insurance, because I pre-ordered my phone from Apple on October 7--turns out their enrollment window is 30 days from the ORDER date, even though it was a pre-order for a product that had not even been released!
So, if I want insurance, I have until the 11th to mail the phone back to Apple's online store for a full refund, and order a new one (Apple's return policy is 30 days from SHIPPING, not ordering).
Is it me?--or is this one messed up system?
Personally i would just save the extra money. Just be extra cautious with the new phone. You could also call up ATT customer service and kindly give your point of view... chances are they will let you get insurance since the dates are so close.. because after all insurance is one of their easy revenue streams.
I would agree with "rimshaker" about foregoing the insurance. Money wise, it's a bad bet unless you happen to be a person prone to accidents or losing things. The only reason I sometimes buy AppleCare is that it makes a good selling point down the road when I upgrade.
That said, AppleCare is available on Amazon for around $70. From Apple, I think it's $99. The ATT plan appears to be either $168 for 2 years based on $7 monthly or $240 ($10 monthly) which includes loss replacement.
If you forego the insurance option, you still get a full year of AppleCare free. And I think Apple still has the $199 replacement option if you go swimming with your phone. See link below for insurance options.

I've never lost or damaged a phone, despite carrying it on and off sailboats almost daily--and I've never insured them before. But after seeing a friend lose her 4S to a theif 3 days after it arrived, I've changed my mind. With replacement costs now at $850, she's very happy to have paid the $6.99 per month! Two days later she received a new phone, and the $199 deductible was added to her bill. Ouch, but it could have been much worse!
Update: While AT&T's customer service line told me I was out of luck, I drove to the nearest AT&T store. I showed them my phone, and they added the coverage. No problem.
I'm still shocked that AT&T wanted to start the clock ticking on enrollment before the product was even released--that's insane.
Edit: Also, the link provided above gives out erroneous information: The $6.99 monthly plan offers replacement for lost, theft, water damage, etc. The more expensive plan offers services already available through Find My Phone.
