My ringtones show up as available and I'm able to set certain ringtones for different contacts. They just don't work. Instead, the default ringtones plays. I very much need custom ringtones to be able to assign priority to answering calls. Yes, they've worked before beautifully on all my previous iPhones. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
I inadvertently discovered the solution to this problem while trying to solve another iPhone problem that had to do with the "Contacts" lists and syncing between iCloud and the other devices we use. The ringtones are failing to work because there are hidden "contact cards" that have slipped through the syncing process or, more commonly, duplicated themselves. So, when you change Mom's ringtone, you only change it on the visible card and not on the one or two that are invisible.
(No, I have no financial interest in this suggestion). Go to the App store and order a $0.99 app called "Cleanup" Version 2.2. Their email address is iphone@greadadventure.nl. After you've downloaded the app, follow the directions that involve turn off syncing between the iPhone and the iCloud. A warning will appear that you will wipe your entire contact list which will scare the **** out of you, but you run Cleanup and it finds and eliminates the invisible duplicates. Then, you turn the syncing back on again.
So, now when you set Mom's ringtone, it will work because there aren't duplicates out there without that specific ringtone.
Good luck. If you want more info on this app and and procedure, do a search for "Cleanup" or "contact duplicates" here in the Support community and you'll probably find the first reason my iPhone functions were messed up.
Good Luck!
Best,
Susan
