Sound works with headphones plugged in, phone is NOT on mute. Have tried to shut off and back on, hard restart, reset, restore from back up and restore to new but still no sound. I have also tried plugging in headphones several times and that did not work either. There is no Apple Store nearby (closest is about 12 hours away) and I would hate to have to send the phone in and be without one for 14 days or have to have the price of a new one frozen on my credit card until they send me a new one and I return the one I have. Anyone know what to do?

Thanks for that but my phone isn't stuck in headphone mode. When I use the volume up and down button on the side of the phone, it says ringer, not headphones. Could it still be this? And is there a reason why it would do it even if I didn't plug headphones in?

I had the exact same problem and someone in a different thread suggested cleaning the charging port with a clean dry toothbrush (gently).  I did this and it works fine now.  I think either pocket lint got in there or some moisture droplets from a recent camping trip in the rain.
