No Sound via 3.5mm Cable audio out iPhone 4

Hello.
Is there a setting on the iPhone 4 to tell it to send sound out via the 3.5mm headphone jack?
When I plug a cable in, the sound still comes from the iPhone rather than the cable.
Cable is just a standard 3.5mm stereo that works fine with everything else.
Various Mac OS X (10.5.8)

its not a software thing
the headset connector have a physical detector which indicate
that a headset is connected if its broken or stuck
what you exp happens
you can try to insert and remove the headset for awhile to get it unstuck
or hand it in for repair

Thanks - but I think Ive found an answer (Google as always):
it seems iPhones have a recessed socket which is incompatible with standard 3.5mm headphone / speaker cables. Theres adapters available to fix this.
What a load of garbage ... Apple ... so very very annoying. The 3.5mm audio jacks were one of the last things Apple hadnt made proprietary.
Microsoft has nothing on Apple these days.

the only iphone which didnt have a std 3.5mm minijcack was the very first one
if that what you have then youre posting in the wrong forum as this is iphone4 forum
which have a perfectly normal 3.5mm

So - your saying you can put any 3.5mm audio cable into your iPhone 4 and the sound will automatically cut from the phone and flow through the jack?
Because this isnt the case according to all the sellers peddling the convertor, such as ...

yes I user perfectly normal headset and external speakers with 3.5mm minijacks without any problems or converters
one use I could see for that adaptor is that many minijacks dont work well when the iphones are in bumbers or cases but other then that I dont see any usage for it unless it carries the mic too which a normal minijack connector dont
